How Did You Break Into The Industry / Your First Job
Throughout my high school and college career, volunteering at local non-profits was very important to me. As my volunteer opportunities, and responsibilities with them grew, I began to be recommended for paid consulting work. Building upon that, I have started Level 3 Media Group that seeks to give those skills to a wider audience.
Long Term Career Goal
My long term goal is to build the brand of Level 3 Media Group, so it can be a full functioning communications and public relations agency. I also plan to expand my skill set by completing an MBA in Marketing.

Hey Joseph.  Welcome to the network.  I have definitely done my share of free work (my work for MGP for example is voluntary).  But as a rule I only take free work on 2 occasions: 1) it will raise my exposure profile or 2) I am truly passionate enough about the project that I want to be involved for free.  If the work doesn't meet those criteria then I don't work for free.

Sometimes landing your paying clients isn't always about $.  I have another non-profit i work for that "pays" me in concert tickets.  That's a fair trade for me.  So for those clients who can't/won't pay try to work out a trade that is beneficial to you.

I have found that if they client either can't pay or has nothing to bring to the table otherwise in trade then they are usually a headache and not worth my "free" time.

Does that help?

Yes it does and thanks a lot. It definitely let me know I was on the right track in terms of making sure that things are mutually beneficial. I also think that your 2 rules will help me in navigating the opportunities that have been coming to me as of late. Again thanks a lot. This is all new to me so any advice is definitely helpful.
